The Black Gnat

The black gnat is one of the most important flies in the anglers arsenal, especially during these summer months. Of all the common fly patterns, the black gnat produces some of the most reliable fishing around. Black gnats usually appear around the middle of May and often stick around for several weeks, making them a very productive fly during the early part of the summer.

They typically prefer warm, still, sunny days but can be seen even on moderately windy days. Both the males and females have a healthy attraction to water and trout are inordinately fond of them, which is good news for fly fishermen everywhere. During particularly busy periods, trout will opt for the fatter females and other surface-riding flies, such as mayfly duns, tend to be ignored.
