Forget what you hear about what’s in and out of style. Trout do most of their feeding underwater, and day in and day out anglers will catch more trout on wet flies and nymphs. This is never more accurate than the early season when fly fishing with wet flies is the way to go. Rivers are flowing high and cold, there is little or no surface activity and fish are eating larval insects. Wet flies are ideal in these conditions because they imitate the larval insects that fish are hunting.

Fishing Wet Flies

The nice thing about fishing wet flies is that they can be fished anywhere you find trout and by using many different methods of presenting the fly to the fish. There is no set right or wrong way to fish these flies. Fishing wet flies to a rising fish during a hatch can many times be more productive than fishing a dry. These flies can be fished upstream dead drift, upstream with imparted motion, across stream dead drift and across with imparted action, as well as the traditional down and across with the wet-fly swing.
